Americorp Vista

Americorp Vista

A Different Perspective.

While most people use field experience as their outside artifact I decided to use my summer job from last year.

  • Americorp Vista is a summer government funded program that  feeds underprivileged children meals during the summer months.
  • I was designated to a location in Vermilion, Ohio.  A rural town in North Central Ohio.
  • What made this experience so rewarding was the fact that it gave me a new perspective on children in my area.  I grew up in suburban Amherst, Ohio and thought every child has the same upbringing that I had.  I had two loving parents that had well off jobs, and went to a good school district.
  • Working in a town that boarders my own and was so different economically opened my eyes to how rough some children have it.  It was common to hear about abused children, children with unemployed parents, or broken homes.
  • The kids in the worse off situations, always had the most behavior problems, it became evident in the summer they just wanted to have someone care about them, which they clearly did not get at home.
  • The most surprising part was that it was in a town that boarded my own, it was in my backyard basically.  It made it evident, that no matter where you go, these problems exist.
